The session also explored how hotel owners and operators intend to navigate this increasing trend in the near future. “It was a very insightful discussion of the major role owners and operators will play in the mid-market segment, and how the GCC will benefit from new travellers following familiar hospitality brands as they make new headway into the Middle East through their mid-market offerings,” Clinton said of the session. “Technology will play an increasing role in the growth of this trend, such as being able to book stays and check in using your mobile phone, among other facilities,” he added. This falls in line with the decree by Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum to encourage the use of smart technologies in various sectors, including Dubai’s hospitality sector. It is hoped this will drive up tourism numbers. SSH has made headway competing for master planning, building design, infrastructure and construction supervision awards on hospitality schemes across the region. The company’s expertise in leading such developments has become more recognised, and now SSH holds a growing number of hospitality projects within its portfolio.

Construction Business News Outlook 2017
Construction Business News Outlook 2017 Construction Business News ME features Robert Hope In the regular news updates provided by Construction Business News ME the CEO of SSH expressed his belief that market sentiment is improving. He stated that certain markets and sectors are being hit harder than others and that the key for SSH is to navigate a steady course around the region focusing on our key client relationships and delivering to the very demanding schedules. We are often teamed with international partners and in some cases getting them to appreciate the time and budget pressures that our clients face in this regional market can be a challenge. Also, as with most businesses in the current market conditions, cash flow is critical and must always be a focus for us to earn and collect the cash in a timely manner especially given the tight margins available. I think that we will see a trend towards utilising consultants committed to and based in the region, who can draw upon world class expertise locally to meet the budget and time constraints that our regional clients face. SSH is shaped and focused to respond to this market trend and as one client said ‘you have hit our sweet spot on what we need to deliver our projects’. Read more

Construction of Emaar’s Creek Horizon development reaches podium level Emaar Properties’ Creek Horizon residential project at Dubai Creek Harbour, has now reached ground level. The project, following the theme of ‘living on an island’, offers a bold ‘destination living experience’ and comprises two towers, rising from a landscaped podium structure. Located at the Dubai Creek Harbour master development, the Creek Horizon project will also offer individual townhouse opportunities and shared leisure amenities, such as a swimming pool, gym and recreation areas, which will help to define a vibrant atmosphere in the residential community. The project’s design encourages an integrated lifestyle development that promises island-style living in Dubai. The scheme is integrated into the district master plan using landscape and place-making to position the development as one of the most desirable in the area. With construction now at podium level, progress on the residential scheme will accelerate. Once complete, the towers will top out at ground + three-level podium + 39 storeys and ground + three-level podium + 36 stories. The towers’ orientation has been designed to maximise on the available views of the waterfront, harbour and central park within the district while also offering long-distance vista opportunities, including the city skyline and Burj Khalifa views. Creek Horizon will form part of Dubai Creek Harbour, a new master plan development from Emaar Properties in joint venture with Dubai Holding that is focused on building urban island residences onto the contours of the creek. Emir of Kuwait attends inauguration of Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre
Emir of Kuwait attends inauguration of Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, and representatives of the Amiri Diwan, were treated to a private inauguration of the country’s latest cultural showcase, the Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre (ASCC), on 5 February. The complex was recently named Public Building of the Year at the prestigious ABB LEAF Awards 2017. The award-winning ASCC development will create a new world-class museum district within Kuwait City. Together with the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre (JACC), it will form Kuwait’s new national cultural district. ASCC is not only a celebration of the scientific and cultural achievements of mankind, but also of Kuwaiti, Islamic and Arab culture and history, and the scale, shapes and shades of the centre’s buildings are designed to convey a sense of wonder and awe. His Highness Sheikh Sabah experienced an opening preformance showcasing the complex’s six main buildings: A Natural History Museum; Science Museum; Museum of Islamic History; Space Museum; Fine Arts Centre; and a Theatre. Each building will contain an array of permanent and temporary world-class exhibits and artworks. “The Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre is a fitting and spectacular addition to Kuwait’s cultural heritage, and sets out to embrace the rich diversity of the world’s finest achievements,” said George Abi-Hanna, Managing Director of SSH Kuwait. “As the largest museums project of its kind in the world, SSH is proud and honoured to have been involved helping His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah and the Amiri Diwan to fulfil their cultural aspirations for Kuwait and the region.” Kuwaiti architecture is represented by the main ‘street’, which meanders echoing the traditional ‘Ferej’. This creates exciting spaces, Islamic patterns, corners and walkways, mirroring the experience of walking down a traditional, busy Kuwaiti street. The Emir’s visit celebrates the completion of the cultural development. ASCC is expected to be opened to the public soon. SSH was appointed by Al Ghanim International as lead architecture and engineering designer on the complex. Michael Byron is interviewed by Construction Week Magazine at Dubai Cityscape 2016
Michael Byron is interviewed by Construction Week Magazine at Dubai Cityscape 2016 Design and Build Contracts Michael Byron, Resident Director in Dubai, is interviewed by Construction Week Magazine at Cityscape 2016. “The early stages of the design and build (D&B) process is about creating the design and adapting the method of construction to meet the demands of the supply chain. In order to do this successfully, the contractor and their team need to understand the client's ambitions and requirements, and that's the key to delivering it successfully". One of the most important criteria a contractor must consider to secure the success of any design and build (D&B) contract is the appointment of the consultant. They need to have the technical expertise, experience and capacity for major fast track D&B delivery. In addition they should command a deep knowledge of the local regulations and approvals processes, critical if delays in the process are to be avoided. SSH believe that it’s false economy to look for the cheapest design quote, it can be a high risk strategy. Contractors should consider the design consultant as a partner in the D&B process and wherever possible look to adopt a collaborative approach. This enables best practice to be shared, 'learning from each other' and repeat business secures better returns for each subsequent project. http://meconstructionnews.com/17665/me-consultant-october-2016

Monitoring visit to AMAR School & Office Work Site
Monitoring visit to AMAR School & Office Work Site SSH have designed the AMAR School for Orphans and an AMAR Office in Basra, Iraq. The school will comprise of 18 teaching and learning spaces for 500 students with additional facilities that include a function space, hall, science laboratories, library, offices and sports areas. It will present an attractive alternative to the standard government administered facilities both in terms of the quality of facilities and the educational standards achieved. It will offer an enhanced learning environment and opportunities for local children in a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere conducive to learning. AMAR currently rents a small office in Basra City which will be replaced by an AMAR owned office built to the Basra Teams requirements. The office and school will share the site with common utilities and systems such as drainage, potable water and power wherever practicable. A series of initial concepts, representations and images were commissioned by the Basra Team who subsequently worked with a small SSH studio team to design both the school and the AMAR office. The design team started by creating a range of inspirational designs that delivered the learning and administrative spaces required and introduced a high level of flexibility in the potential use of spaces so that they may be used for charity functions and wider community use out of school hours. AMAR were not only focussed on potential costs associated with the development but also the simplicity of construction using readily available materials and with a minimum design life of 25 years capable of operating independently of locally supplied utilities (power and water). SSH are proud to be part of the unique opportunity to design and create educational facilities for the future and delighted to offer our specialist assistance to deliver the best possible facilities to support teaching and learning in the region.
Navigating the Unique Complexities of Designing Healthcare Facilities
Navigating the Unique Complexities of Designing Healthcare Facilities SSH’s healthcare specialist, Dr. Angela Burke, presented at this year’s Big 5 construction exhibition in Kuwait. Informed by her experience as a medical planner, she spoke to an international audience as to how design team members can navigate the unique complexities associated with designing contemporary healthcare facilities. She explained the extent to which healthcare design projects vary in speciality and scale. New healthcare facilities can range between an 800 bed facility, such as, SSH’s current Kuwait Children’s Hospital project, to a 7,000 sqm unique stem cell and umbilical cord facility which is currently under construction in the Al-Sabah region of Kuwait. She advised that, regardless of scale or type, a number of key considerations must be addressed and implemented. While similar to other architectural projects, she outlined the extent to which the industry needs to be aware that healthcare design schemes require additional services including health planning, medical planning, medical equipment spatial planning as well as specialist expertise that might include radiation protection and infection control services. Angela recommended establishing an organised management team to co-ordinate the work of large and knowledgeable design teams. Introduced during her presentation was the field of study that emphasises the importance of credible evidence to influence healthcare design is Evidence-Based Design (EBD). This use of knowledge improves patient and staff well-being by minimising patients, family and staff stress. One design strategy described was the introduction of positive distractions (artwork, entertainment and nature) to improve patient healing, stress reduction and better safety. Angela also stressed the need for specialist interior design in medical environments stating that infection control is a major consideration in healthcare environments as well as issues of materiality. Typical items he advised for consideration included slip-resistant and static free flooring, wall protection, chair materiality and strength of structure, and easily cleaned sanitary arrangements positioned in appropriate locations that support EBD and the occupants of the building. In summary Dr. Angela Burke stated that healthcare outcomes continue to benefit greatly from lessons learned as a consequence of recent developments in international healthcare design and the importance of regulation and standards in assisting navigation through the unique complexities of designing for improved healthcare.

Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre shortlisted for ABB LEAF Awards 2017
Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre shortlisted for ABB LEAF Awards 2017 The Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre in Kuwait has been shortlisted as a finalist for Public Building of the Year for the upcoming ABB LEAF Awards 2017. All shortlisted projects will be represented at a gala awards ceremony on 21 September at the Royal Horseguards Hotel, in London. The complex, a new museum district for the city of Kuwait, is a celebration of mankind’s scientific and cultural achievements. The museums celebrate Kuwaiti, Islamic and Arab culture and history. They will also embrace and showcase the rich diversity of the world’s finest cultural achievements. The project is due to be completed by the end of this year and will consist of six main buildings: A Natural History Museum; Science Museum; Museum of Islamic History; Space Museum; Fine Arts Centre; and a Theatre. Each museum building will contain an array of permanent and temporary world-class exhibits and artworks. Walking through the cultural district beneath the canopy of the street is a journey full of surprises, with stunning views deep into the heart of the museums where visitors will see framed vistas of priceless exhibits. Kuwaiti architecture is represented by the main ‘street’, which meanders and echoes the traditional ‘Ferej’. This creates exciting spaces, Islamic patterns, corners and walkways, mirroring the experience of walking down a traditional, busy Kuwaiti street. The museum buildings and the circulation between them are shaded and partially climatically controlled using a solar shade canopy, which is 200 m long with cantilevers of 30 m. The structure was inverted to allow the installation of 2,000 LED-lit shingles, which were parametrically designed and DMX controller-linked to provide evening light shows and daytime shade. The material chosen by SSH for the exterior cladding and roof paving of the complex was also carefully selected. The approved stone, named Skyline, is a true marble from Turkey with a clearly defined vein orientation in the quarry strata. Skyline has all the technical and aesthetic characteristics to meet the stringent requirements of the project. SSH was appointed as lead architecture and engineering designer on the complex. The annual LEAF (Leading European Architecture Forum) Awards brings together an audience of more than 100 leading senior figures from the world’s elite architectural design community. They will convene to celebrate, discuss and honour some of the best new international architectural projects, according to their specific criteria. The LEAF Awards has been running for more than 16 years and all shortlisted and winning projects are recognised as setting the benchmark for the future of the industry.

Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre wins at CID Awards
Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre wins at CID Awards The Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre (JACC), in Kuwait, has collected another accolade, winning Interior Design of the Year, Public Sector, at the Commercial Interior Design (CID) Awards gala ceremony on 13 September 2017. The CID Awards pay tribute to the projects, interior design firms and designers making their mark on the region’s interior design industry, and herald work that displays original thinking, creative breadth and a willingness to stray from tried and tested formulas. The award judges “appreciated this modern twist on Arab architecture, with its graphite colouring and the use of symbolic patterns and poetry in a contemporary and artistic way. The project was particularly praised for the way it plays with light and shadow.” Winning its category at this year’s CID Awards event follows the success of the JACC complex also being celebrated as Best Public Service Architecture and Public Service Interior at the Africa & Arabia Property Awards, and winning the Award of Merit at ENR’s Global Best Projects Awards. Since opening in November 2016, the complex has played host to performing arts, local performances and international acts. The facility is the centrepiece of a world-class theatre quarter. The JACC complex’s key buildings are the Theatre Centre, Music Centre, Conference Centre and National Library for Historical Documents. Complex geometric shapes, inspired by Islamic architecture, form the richly textured outer skin of the four buildings that make up JACC, which sit like jewels within a large national Park for Kuwait. The wonders continue inside each building, with visitors discovering jewels within jewels, as they explore the beautifully designed interiors. A major interior feature at the complex is a monolithic signature chandelier that illuminates the entrance foyer to the National Theatre and spans between the outer walls of the National Theatre and Drama Theatre. Drawing an analogy between glass and water, the fixture presents itself in a tiered array of falling glass to evoke the impression of a giant indoor waterfall that visitors can walk around, pass under or walk behind at balcony levels. Another talking point is decorative calligraphy, spread over 8,000 sqm across the four building’s pavilions and designed into the cladding of the theatres, concert halls and libraries. Seven stanzas taken from the Kuwaiti Amir’s own sayings promoting culture and development were selected by the Amiri Diwan for each calligraphic installation. SSH was appointed as lead architecture, interior design and engineering designer on the complex. Find out more about CID Awards here and here.

SSH partners with University of Salford to offer summer internship
SSH partners with University of Salford to offer summer internship SSH’s inaugural summer internship programme was successfully launched this year. Want to know what it’s like to intern at one of the MENA regions’ leading architecture and engineering consultancies? Meet 22 year old Tamara Karim, a student at the University of Salford, UK, currently studying Architecture Design and Technology. Having previously worked as a junior architect for Architect CT, focusing on interior design and architectural work, Tamara applied for the summer internship after seeing an advert calling for ambitious architecture students keen to relocate to the Middle East for an intense summer programme. After fierce competition and two rigorous interviews, her passion and dedication stood out and an offer was made. During her time at SSH, where she was Kuwait-based, Tamara experienced working for a company that has been adding to GCC cityscapes for decades, working side-by-side with our architectural studio team, learning more about the architectural business. Tamara’s duties included architectural sketching, research to create mood boards, turning them into conceptual ideas and drafting clients’ presentations for proposals and competitions. She also attended team meetings, discussing how to take the clients’ requirements and put them into concept. Working on a diverse range of projects that included two mixed-use towers in Downtown Dubai and Ras Al Bar Resort in addition to a master planning project in Bahrain, and the Kuwait Oil Company Housing project, she was able to improve her craft. She learned and practised her work using IT packages such as In-Design, Photoshop, AutoCAD and Rhino. With these skills, international experience, and a range of large-scale projects in her portfolio, Tamara has made a positive impact on her future, she feels ‘more independent and with a clearer view of her career path’. Particularly inspired by two strong female leaders at SSH, Business Development Director Karen Mort and Head of Interior Design Sebaa Orabi. ‘The office has an amazing atmosphere, with great experts that were there to help and teach throughout my whole journey. I’ve learnt a lot and made a lot of new friends’, highlights Tamara, who has also learnt a very important skill: networking. Whilst in Kuwait, Tamara had the opportunity to attend an Alumni Network event hosted by the University of Salford, where she connected with experts in diversified fields, received expert advice and was able to get some impressive contacts which she plans to put to good use once she graduates. Karen Mort, SSH’s Business Development Director stated that ‘SSH is pleased to have provided the opportunity for a talented young professional. We are always pleased to hear from ambitious students from our strategic partners, the University of Salford, either undergraduates looking to boost their skills and experience in a summer internship, or graduates who are looking for a career opportunity in the Middle East’.
SSH presents case for cloud-based sharing platforms
SSH presents case for cloud-based sharing platforms Eoin Nield, SSH’s BIM Manager, presented a case study to delegates at the Autodesk Futures’ Forum, an event that explores future technologies and their application by design professionals working across the architecture, consulting and contracting sectors. The forum was held at IMG Worlds of Adventure, in Dubai. Entitled ‘From Paper to Vapour – Demystifying Design in the Cloud’, Eoin’s presentation outlined SSH’s shift to cloud-based sharing platforms and the subsequent benefits this has for multi-regional design teams. “By adopting cloud-based sharing methodologies, SSH has optimised data-transfer processes between regional teams to increase collaboration and develop streamlined design review and document control processes,” Eoin said. Since utilising cloud-oriented processes, SSH has increased its efficiencies as an architecture and engineering consultancy and improved inter-departmental communications across its design teams stationed around the Middle East region and beyond.
SSH presents JACC as leading edge of cultural building innovation at KISR Concourse
SSH presents JACC as leading edge of cultural building innovation at KISR Concourse Delegates at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research’s (KISR’s) Innovation Concourse received a special presentation explaining the creative and practical considerations underpinning the design of the country’s latest cultural complex, the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre (JACC), by architecture and engineering consultancy SSH. The event was held on Wednesday 22 February 2017, at the KISR Shuwaikh Campus in the capital city. The KISR Innovation Concourse aims to highlight various aspects of innovative approaches to design, from the initial inspiration, through practical invention and application, to the commercialisation of such projects. The event culminated in a spotlight presentation that showcased an accomplishment made in one of these areas. The SSH developed JACC is Kuwait’s latest contribution to the country’s cultural landscape. Cultural buildings are some of the most important focal points of a city. They act as a nexus for creativity, encouraging cultural interaction, celebrating international and local talent, being a primer for education and helping to inspire new, fresh perspectives within the artistic community. To mirror this artistic ethos, cultural centres must be architecturally dynamic, awe-inspiring structures. Contemporary and aesthetically pleasing design must blend seamlessly with practical and flexible functionality, utilising cutting-edge building techniques, materials, technologies and practices. This is of increased importance in the harsher climates of the Middle East, where such institutions must be capable of withstanding environmental extremes without compromising their primary function. This need to adapt to the region’s climate often leads to new public buildings becoming a showcase for structural and environmental innovation. The JACC development, which opened to the public late last year, epitomises these ideals and is the centrepiece of a wider national cultural district, also master planned by SSH. Ray Phillips, Design Director, CSO and Senior Partner at SSH, and Lead Designer of the JACC, described to delegates how, by working closely with the client, an initial design brief had been developed outlining the scope and ultimate vision for the scheme. The guidelines, for four core structures encompassing the different practical aspects and site considerations for the development, led to the ‘four jewels’ concept for the centre. The main buildings are encased in an Islamic-inspired geometric titanium envelope, which are designed to interact with light and shadow and are set like jewels within extensive landscaped grounds. The highly textured outer skin has resulted in a dramatic external aesthetic against the surrounding public spaces that sees the JACC stand out as a major focal point of the Kuwait City skyline. This outer casing also acts as temperature regulation and a protective watertight weather shield for the core structures beneath, with their creative functions – a Theatre Centre, Music Centre, Conference Centre and National Library for Historical Documents – becoming the creative “jewels within jewels” of the development. Inside, the core structures highly flexible spaces have been designed, with aspects, including the Conference Centre, able to physically transform to accommodate the practical public needs of the complex. The interior public areas are beautifully designed, but also practical, carrying the external canopies’ Islamic-inspired design language into the interior spaces via further geometric forms and Islamic calligraphy. “Working together with the client, SSH embarked on a design journey to realise a series of dramatic yet flexible buildings. Careful planning enabled us to fulfil the client’s ultimate vision for a cultural space that will be a new centrepiece for creativity, not only for Kuwait, but also the wider Middle East,” said SSH’s Ray Phillips at the concourse event.
SSH presents outline of BIM compliance at ‘BIM: A Roadmap for Kuwait’ Conference
SSH presents outline of BIM compliance at ‘BIM: A Roadmap for Kuwait’ Conference Kuwait University’s College of Architecture hosted a conference to discuss the development of a roadmap for BIM adoption in Kuwait. The conference, entitled ‘BIM: A Roadmap for Kuwait’, took place on Monday 27th March 2017 in Kuwait and was attended by several key building industry professionals from Kuwait Municipality, the Ministry of Public Works (MPW), Amiri Diwan and many others. As an example of BIM compliance, Eoin Nield, BIM Manager at SSH, presented an outline of the recent BIM mandates introduced by the Dubai Municipality (DM) and the subsequent challenges facing consultants, authorities, contractors and supply chains. Drawing on this experience, Eoin recommended that the MPW should consider establishing a steering committee for BIM in Kuwait to “…draw together government legislators, building industry professionals and end users to develop a robust BIM protocol for government projects”. Eoin was particularly supportive of the MPW’s intention to introduce a BIM mandate. “In considering BIM mandates, the MPW is embracing the value-added proposition of BIM methodologies and how they can aid in increased inter-disciplinary communication and collaboration to minimise construction risks and costs,” he said.

SSH’s ASCC Appears in ME Architect and DesignMENA.com Simon Dennison, Design Director at SSH, talks about the inspiration and influences behind the company’s recently opened Kuwaiti culture and heritage project, the Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre (ASCC) in the April edition of Middle East Architect magazine. The article also appears on the DesignMENA website. Simon explained the core inspiration for the complex is the central ‘street’ that forms ASCC’s main focal point. “Islamic geometric patterns have been merged with a contemporary aesthetic to produce a design that evokes the traditional with the futuristic,” Simon said. “The concept of the central street also imparts a sense of cultural heritage, but the complex’s design reimagines and presents that heritage using 21st century materials.” He added: “Traditional architecture diverts the breeze and creates shade to cool the spaces below, while modern technology enabled the creation of the cultural centre’s canopy to do the same.” Read the full online article here.

SSH’s Boris Fabinski discusses Biophilia at The Design Forum 2018
SSH’s Boris Fabinski discusses Biophilia at The Design Forum 2018 Boris Fabinski, Principal Landscape Architect at SSH, brought his considerable expertise to a panel discussion on biophilic design at Design Middle East’s inaugural The Design Forum 2018 event on 15 March at W Hotel, Al Habtoor City, in Dubai. The debut event aimed to provide networking opportunities for designers and suppliers, while showcasing presentations from industry leaders and presenting exciting sector-relevant panel discussions. Main themes covered the influence of 3D printing on the design industry, how educational institutions focus enhancing the environment, and Biophilic design. Biophilia, also known as biotecture, is a building design philosophy of integrating nature, from natural light and vegetation, to materials and natural views, into modern buildings with the aim of creating a pleasant habitat for the people within. Boris and his co-panellists in the first session of the event, Biophilia in Design, spoke about how biophilia challenges conventional architectural and engineering practices by promoting the beneficial experience of nature in the built environment. “Biotecture and well-planned landscape design has been proved to improve people’s health and sense of wellbeing, from office buildings to healthcare facilities,” said Boris about his participation in the session. “People have an intrinsic connection to nature, and there is an increasing demand to integrate it more and more into our urban environments using vegetation, natural materials, and integrating natural elements, such as sunlight and water.”
SSH’s David Daniels discusses value engineering on AHIC panel
SSH’s David Daniels discusses value engineering on AHIC panel David Daniels, Director of Architecture at SSH, discussed how hotel owners and developers must be mindful of building value and return on investment into new hospitality projects in a panel session on Day Three of the UAE edition of the Arabian Hotel Investment Conference (AHIC). AHIC UAE, which ran from 17-19 April 2018 and was held for the first time in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, took place in a beachfront ‘AHIC Village’ at the Waldorf Astoria. Attendees from across the region and beyond, gathered to gain expert insight from speakers, and discovered opportunities within the hospitality and hotel development sector. David and co-panellists, in the session entitled Focus on Value Engineering, spoke on how the hospitality sector in the GCC has matured, leading to owners and developers having to change their hotel models to adapt, with better returns on investment playing a much bigger role in the construction of new projects. “Adding value is crucial to modern hotel development,” said David of the panel discussion. “To have a forum such as AHIC to exchange ideas and opinions on how owners, developers and consultants such as SSH can work towards building added value into the design and engineering phases of future projects is superb.”
SSH’s David Daniels presents at Arabian Hotel Investment Conference
SSH’s David Daniels presents at Arabian Hotel Investment Conference David Daniels, Design Principal, Studio at SSH, presented a talk on ‘Hotels of the Future’ at the Arabian Hotel Investment Conference, a hospitality industry event held at Madinat Jumeirah, in Dubai. Using the ‘PechaKucha' format of presentation, where speakers present 20 slides for 20 seconds each, David outlined that hotel brands must adapt to current consumer trends and move towards a more immersive and authentically local experience for their visitors that competitive models, such as home-sharing portals, provide. By recreating the home-sharing accommodation trend, but with the perks of hotel living and set within an architecturally stunning concept, such as the building designs SSH is known for, the hotel industry can keep pace with consumer desires for new lifestyle experiences. David stressed the importance of building brand recognition and the key role tools such as social media and an online presence have in promoting that message to consumers and, ultimately, that iconic architectural hotels help to drive the recognition hospitality brands seek. “People want to buy into a culture … they want to take that shot and put it on Instagram to be recognised as part of that luxurious lifestyle. That social presence [for hotel brands] is invaluable,” David said. “And what the hospitality industry can do going forward is to hire really good architects to design buildings for them that creates that really good brand image.”

SSH’s Kuwait Children’s Hospital article appears in Landscape ME magazine
SSH’s Kuwait Children’s Hospital article appears in Landscape ME magazine An article by Paul Fraser, Landscape Architect at SSH, explaining how the landscape design of SSH’s upcoming major healthcare project, the Kuwait Children’s Hospital (KCH), can promote patient recovery, appeared in the February issue of Landscape Middle East. The hospital will be the largest of its kind in the world once complete and is a landmark development for Kuwait, delivering 792 beds over 300,000 sqm of functional floor space. Paul’s article explains how the design language of KCH’s exterior and interior spaces seamlessly transition and work together to provide positive healing environments not only for potential patients’, but also for staff who will work at the new facility. “The brief called for a futuristic yet functional design, fusing energy efficiency, state-of-the-art technology and world-class healthcare design.” Paul writes. “At the same time, as hospitals are places of hope and rehabilitation, a key principle of the design team’s agenda was to create a welcoming and positive environment for all children and their families.” He continues: “Studies have shown that views across attractive gardens from within a healthcare facility can have a positive impact on clinical outcomes … in addition to offering extended views to semi-public and private areas. This underlined to the team the value not only of the experience within the garden, but the views across it from within the building – both during the day and at night.” Read Paul’s full article by visiting Landscape Middle East’s website here.

The London Office welcomed Sadoon Al-Essa, Executive Partner
The London Office welcomed Sadoon Al-Essa, Executive Partner Sadoon spent the afternoon catching up with the interiors and graphics team, and meeting some staff for the first time. Ray Phillips and Jake Dyter were also in the office, along with Mike Otlet and Dom Pask from OPS Structures Ltd, so it proved to be an informative day for Sadoon, who was able to see how SSH’s UK staff are able to collaborate and contribute to the work of our wider team through the ‘Cloud’. Sadoon and Ray have been providing the artistic direction that underpins the new ‘Branding’ of SSH and so their input into this process, led by Karen Mort with the support of the Graphics Team in London was most valuable. Sadoon received his new SSH Business Cards which have now arrived in each of our offices direct from London. Some individuals will have their own bespoke card and there are cards dedicated to each office so that we all may use them when appropriate.
