Colm Dunphy, Principal Architect at SSH, took part in a panel discussion at the Kuwait edition of the world’s leading conference on façade design and engineering, Zak World of Façades, on 30 October at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Kuwait City. At the conference, Colm said architecture practices should work more closely with universities.
Zak World of Façades is an international touring conference that focuses on façade design and engineering. The Kuwait edition, the 51st in the global series, discussed the latest innovations and challenges in building envelope design and showcased the latest technological solutions.
Colm brought his expertise to the panel discussion ‘Innovations in Façade Construction for Modern Architecture’, which centred on the digital influences on façade construction, and state-of-the-art trends in Middle East façade design. The panellists also talked about safety, sustainability and materials used in contemporary façade design.
Among these topics, Colm stressed on how practices and consultancies should collaborate with universities to introduce sustainable building design to students. While university tutors can teach students the philosophy of design, he said architecture practices can “bring reality” to how projects are constructed.
“We as architects have the experience, so we should take steps to introduce ourselves to universities and collaborate with universities and tutors to establish an education programme,” Colm told the conference. “Not so much to teach students the details of energy efficiency, environmental architecture etc., but to sow that seed, then students can find out further information for themselves.”
