The Late Salwa Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah Stem Cell and Umbilical Cord Centre
The Late Salwa Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah Stem Cell and Umbilical Cord Centre, designed by SSH, is a 12,000 sqm healthcare facility in Kuwait that houses an outpatient unit for healthy adult stem cell collection, a fully self-sufficient cryolab, which stores adult and cord blood stem cells, as well as stem cell research facilities.
The operational organisation of the building was planned jointly by SSH’s medical planning team and specialist advisers, resulting in the development of a unique building that caters to the clients’ specific functional needs. Our shared expertise enabled the team to develop a critical adjacency matrix to rationalise departmental relationships. The location of departments within the facility is governed by convenient access points and an efficient circulation system that minimises the travel distances of staff, donors, patients, visitors and blood samples.
The Healthcare team conceptualised the design, produced the drawings and coordinated the information from the various disciplines for all the design phases of the facility. In addition, the SSH team oversaw the output of the following documentation: architecture, structural, mechanical, electrical engineering, plumbing, quantity surveying, medical planning, equipment test fit and interior design.
This state-of-the-art facility will increase capacity, improve turnaround times for processing, and offer the potential for research-related activities. It will ensure that any cell products are produced in accordance with the strictest international accreditation standards and therefore deliver improved patient care.
The Late Salwa Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah Stem Cell and Umbilical Cord Centre was inaugurated on 18 June 2019 in Kuwait, under the patronage of Kuwait’s Minister of Health Sheikh Dr. Basel Humoud Al Sabah.
