Junoot Eco Resort
There is no better way to get back to nature than being at one with Earth. SSH is the design consultant for an URC’s eco-resort Junoot Project. A leading MENA real estate developer, URC is developing this project along the shores of Oman’s untouched southern beaches, approximately 320 KM north-east of Salalah. Inspired by the Iranian humanitarian architect Nader Khalili, via his brainchild Cal-Earth, URC commissioned Cal-Earth to create this prototype to set an example of the type of architecture that is most desirable to high-end, authentic-experience seeking, and adventurous tourists.
Growing out of the sand like a polished anthill, the smooth white curves hide a structure which has been made out of a mixture of earth, plaster and old fishing nets. Khalili’s original design was intended as a shelter for refugees, as well as a response to NASA’s call for buildings that would make suitable accommodation in settings such as the moon or on mars. Thirty years later, Khalili’s blueprints have found both physically and accolades; the Junoot eco-dome and triple vault mock-ups have been built, which won first prize in the Future Projects – Leisure category at the World Architectural Festival 2012 as well as the Judges Special Recognition Award at the 11th Annual MIPIM Architecture Review Future Projects Award in March 2013.
